Item Description
Captain Rachel Dean and her husband, Captain Simon Dean, of Solomons Island Heritage Tours invite your group of 6 to join them for an exciting 1.5 hour adventure on the Chesapeake Bay!
The Deans, both watermen, are the owners of Patuxent River Seafood, a business that sells fish, crabs and oysters to businesses and residents. As watermen, the Deans often hear people say "I'd like to see that," and that is what inspired Solomons Island Heritage Tours.
By observing and engaging in a variety of harvesting methods for blue crabs, finfish, and oysters on a working fishing vessel, visitors will be given an opportunity to experience estuarine life up close through the eyes of a Chesapeake Bay waterman.
There are a number of possibilities of what you can do with this tour.
- Be a "Waterman for a Day." Chase the Bay's bounty. Learn about seasonal gear types and techniques used to make a living on the Chesapeake Bay. Sit back and observe or get involved..it's up to you!
*This is a great tour for kids. If tour is taken on weekends, kids can help collect bait (such as spot, croaker, toadfish, eel) from bait pots, which the Deans use to catch fish during the week. - Create Your Own Excursion. Possibilities include seeing Cove Point lighthouse at sunset, exploring the Bay's wildlife as you cruise under the Thomas Johnson Bridge, or maybe even cruising to a beach!
- Help Catch Crabs (June only, must call ahead to see if pots are set). Participants in this trip can go along for the Dean's 1.5 hour collection. Back at the dock or on the boat, they will share their seasoning recipes and show you the technique to pickin' crabs. You will fill the pot and set the timer to enjoy some of the bounty! It doesn't get any fresher than this!
