Created to celebrate Richard MacDonald's two decade long exploration of performance as an art form, this catalog shines a light on the beauty and excitement of circus themed sculpture, painting, and drawing by the artist. The circus has always sparked the imagination of artists. In colorful, bohemian Paris at the turn of the last century, artists such as Picasso, Chagall, and Calder drew inspiration from the eccentric, theatrical world of circus performers. Today Richard MacDonald is inspired by the same tradition, exploring the realm of theatrical beauty, emotional impact, and sheer, visual drama that is Cirque du Soleil. In these pages you will experience both recent and classic works by the artist, inspired by the talent and beauty of the performers. Richard MacDonald's early fascination with mimes and street performers led him to create sculptures full of whimsical humor, gentle irony, and playfulness. The characters he created in bronze capture the viewer's imagination with their personality and expressive gesture. During the next ten years, Richard MacDonald continued to develop the theme of performance in his work, ultimately resulting in his study of performers from Cirque du Soleil. The most recent series retains the character of the earliest mimes--their charm and wit-- with an emphasis on the fluid grace and strength of these world-class performers. . .
