Item Description

The youth program at Boulder Aikikai is for youth 9-16.  Boulder Aikikai is located at 2424 30th St.  (www.boulderaikikai.org)

Aikido teaches body awareness, sensitivity to movement and coordination.  Aikido training develops self-confidence and a positive self-image.

Aikido is a relatively recent innovation and was created in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Aikido is not primarily a system of combat, but rather a means of self-cultivation and improvement. Aikido has no tournaments, competitions, contests, or "sparring." Instead, all aikido techniques are learned cooperatively at a pace commensurate with the abilities of each trainee. According to the founder, the goal of aikido is not the defeat of others, but the defeat of the negative characteristics which inhabit one's own mind and inhibit its functioning.

The primary focus of the children's program is the development of the self.  Body strength and coordination are developed from physical movement.   Awareness, concentration, focus and self-esteem are improved.   Students develop a sense of center and grounding.

Aikido is unique among martial arts as it teaches children how to avoid fighting.    Aikido helps children learn to deal with difficult situations in a non-violent, non-confrontational manner.  They are taught not to become fearful or aggressive when encountering conflict, but to deliberately redirect a potentially negative interaction.  This process helps children build good social and communication skills.
