Claude Larson – Textile and Mixed Media Artist
Claude Larson has been a resident of Sussex County since 1986 where the rural environment has deeply influenced her work.  She finds inspiration in the natural world and uses it to direct her art.  As a science teacher for nearly all of her professional career, she incorporates the lessons of science and nature into her artwork.

Primarily self-taught, she has worked with many different mediums in her search for creative expression, returning always to textiles.  In 2008 she began working as an art quilter, using her skills from varied artistic endeavors to create mixed media art quilts.  Through experimentation and the creative process she uses the fabric or other artifacts to direct her work.  She has named her studio “Random Acts of Piece”.  Often she begins with a sketch or idea in mind but allows the fabrics or other media to direct a piece to its completion.  Quite often the end result has little resemblance to the original sketch or idea.  When entering her design space she remains open to whatever materials or processes inspire her in the moment.  This allows her work to be random in design yet, distinctly hers in execution.

Along with art quilting, Claude enjoys creating textiles through various processes including hand dyeing, painting, marbling, rusting and manipulation.  These techniques sometimes allow her to work in a series as she experiments with a specific process.  Other times the experiments are added to her extensive stash and resurface at a later date.  Once again allowing her to randomly choose materials in the creative moment.

Claude’s more recent work can be seen on her blog, http://randomactsofpiece.blogspot.com/, named after her studio and creative process.  More complete descriptions of her process and inspirations can be seen there.

Claude describes her art as an opportunity to release the freedom that is inside of her in order to create something that she didn’t realize was missing until she found it.
