Item Description

I should be happy Shirt, by Betsy Birkner

Bella® 100% Pima Cotton Women’s long-sleeve T-shirt, white (size L)

Artist, Betsy Birkner has created a line of exclusive wearable art inspired by her ceramic armor series, I Should. . .

The I Should . . . shirt series is debuting at the 2017 NAFE Event and are not yet available to the public. Winner may choose a size M or size L shirt.

Both the ceramic armor collection and the shirt series explore how larger cultural expectations for success dictate all the things woman should do or be… sexy, or skinny, have babies, or careers, etc., and the often negative result of the weight of those expectations.

Birkner explains, “We armor ourselves against the onslaught of family, media and cultural messages, protecting the vulnerability of the ideal self. Until our true values can emerge from behind the curtain, the ceramic armor serves as a façade of adorned fragility.

The fragility of the utilitarian object of war being sculpted of clay suggests our temporary nature as we invent and protect our authentic self.  We can break free from the messages that do not ring true for us. I should be happy is what we strive for”.

Comes with a curated selection of note cards from Betsy Birkner's clay collection.
