Born in Brooklyn, New York, Donald Greason studied at the Arts Student League, and was a studio mate of Alexander Calder while studying in Paris. He was the director of the Artist's Gallery in New York City and helped to launch artists like Thomas Hart Benton.

For many years he was artist-in-residence at Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, and Rollins College in Florida. He lived in Massachusetts for much of his later life completing a series of paintings of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and murals for Harvard University.
