Item Description

Ten one-hour online or in-person sessions (based on geographical location) offer an Introduction to the Arabic language and culture with Georges Chahwan. Develop a basic knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic through a comprehensive and integrated method emphasizing listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Work with a variety of media to master the Arabic alphabet and sounds, build vocabulary, acquire basic grammar skills, and read and comprehend Modern Standard Arabic. This course focuses on Modern Standard Arabic with an exposure to Levantine colloquial through music, songs, and short videos. By the end of this course, have both a solid command of basic linguistic structures and skills, in addition to a further understanding and appreciation of Arab culture and Art. Progress is assessed through performance on weekly assignments and projects.

Holder of a DESS from the Lebanese University and an MA from the University of Geneva, Georges’ passion for languages, as well as his scholarly endeavors, led him to teach Arabic at the Lebanese University, the American University of Beirut, Grenoble University in France, and at Choate Rosemary Hall. Throughout his teaching career he has helped design curriculum, write syllabi, develop and launch online courses, create and expand Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies programs, and craft and direct summer Arabic programs in Jordan, Oman, and Morocco.
