Item Description

Brunello di Montalcino is one Italy's most famous and prestigious wines. All Brunello di Montalcino wine is made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes grown on the slopes around Montalcino – a classic Tuscan hilltop village 20 miles south of Siena. The word Brunello translates roughly as 'little dark one', and is the local vernacular name for Sangiovese Grosso, the large-berried form of Sangiovese which grows in the area. Brunello must be made from 100% Sangiovese and aged for at least four years (five for riserva wines). Two of these years must be spent in oak, and the wine must be bottled at least four months prior to commercial release. The elegant, age-worthy wine which results from these strict laws is known for its brilliant garnet hue and its bouquet of berries with underlying vanilla and spice. A hint of earthiness brings balance to the finest examples. – Wine Searcher

Vitanza Brunello di Montalcino Tradizione 2005

Wine Spectator 92:

Porcini, dark fruits and spices on the nose. Full-bodied, with ripe, juicy tannins and lots of opulent fruit that turns to dried fruitcake, chocolate and almond. Best after 2011.

Casanuova delle Cerbaie Brunello di Montalcino 2003

Vinous 91:

The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino from Casanuova delle Cerbaie is a rich, weighty wine imbued with complex notes of earthiness, game, smoke, black cherries, leather, herbs and sweet toasted oak. Though expansive and long on the palate, it comes across as quite brooding and backward. The wine is approachable with air, but will likely be even better in another year or two. It will especially appeal to readers who enjoy a powerful, brawny style of Brunello. This is a strong effort from Casanuova delle Cerbaie in a tricky vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017.

La Lecciaia Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2007

Vinous 90:

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is an immediate, juicy wine with good depth and fine overall balance. Dark fruit, smoke, tobacco and herbs all add complexity on a finish supported by firm yet well-integrated tannins. It should drink well 2015-2022.

Pertimali (Livio Sassetti) Brunello di Montalcino 2003

Vinous 92:

Pertimali's 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is once again among the small number of wines being made in Montalcino that offers real character. This intense, powerful Brunello exhibits the essence of flowers, tar, smoke, dark cherries and wild herbs as it opens to reveal superb depth and concentration. The tannins of the vintage are present, but the wine's sheer richness provides more than enough balance. A surprisingly fresh, long finish rounds out the wine. Prime drinking window should be 2008-2018.
