Item Description
Oil on cavas, 48"W x 36"H.
I encounter landscapes in flux, constantly changing with the cycle of nature and human presence. Not only am I attracted to the aesthetics of geological formations; I am also interested in the dynamic forces continually shaping them. The time I spend outdoors, pursuing various recreational activities and living outdoors, gives me a multi-dimensional understanding of an environment, allowing me to paint landscapes in a way that goes beyond pure aesthetics.
At Oberlin College, I studied environmental policy and studio art in tandem. I studied both because I have a passion for painting, but am also deeply concerned about the state of our environment. Through my exploration of the two disciplines—environmental studies and studio art, I now view my work as a landscape painter as a component of the environmental movement. The act of painting a subject applies value to it, and I value our environment. However, my role as a human viewing a landscape is complicated, and I am continually engaging with the complexity of this relationship in my artwork.
