Item Description
This unique shadowbox by Charleston-based artist, taxidermist, and all-around creative, Becca Barnet is filled with preserved flowers and a museum-quality insect specimen that has been ethically sourced.
From intricate drawings to delicate sculptures, Becca Barnet's artwork explores why humans have the tendency to try to hold on to the fleeting corporeal.
Barnet's work is influenced by a fascination with natural history and preservation. Just before graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2009 (BFA illustration), Becca attended the Missouri Taxidermy Institute. She has a special knack and patience for taxidermy repair, from cleaning to completely renovating mounts. Becca’s love of replicating textures and preserving animals has led her to fabricate many different museum displays.
Becca is proud to have worked on traveling exhibits for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, including being a member of the team that created the sixty-foot Mamenchisaurus for "The World's Largest Dinosaurs."
She has also worked under George Dante at Wildlife Preservations and Richard Webber at Museum Productions. She created a permanent display of a fabricated limestone cave for the College of Charleston under Technical Theater Solutions in Charleston, SC.
In 2012, Becca fabricated live animal enclosures and scenery for the “Madagascar Journey" exhibit at the South Carolina Aquarium. In Spring '13, she was featured in Garden & Gun magazine for creating art with taxidermy, including the installations for The Ordinary, a James Beard Award winning restaurant.
