Item Description

For hundreds of years, Cinderella has served as one of the most popular folk tales and has fascinated the world over. Folklorists have counted over 800 international versions! Cinderella is present in our imagination even without the gowns, ballrooms, or princes charming. Common traits of the tale, whether told in Korean, Inuit, German, or French cultural context all include: a nasty stepmother, an ineffectual father, a fairy godmother, animal helpers, and—always—remarkable footwear. Though his shoes do not come into play, Harry Potter is another version of this tale; it can be surprising how closely that modern story aligns with what is often thought of as a girl's fantasy. Before the group meets, we'll read a few variants of the Cinderella tale and then, while enjoying a spectacular high tea prepared by our very own Linh Tran, we'll meet at the relaxing, verdant home of junior parent, Meeta Gandhi for a discussion led by Kate Kordich (Associate Director of College Counseling and former CPS English teacher) about how different cultures (including popular media versions) adapt this ubiquitous, ancient, and surprising story. Come join in the discussion and surprise yourself with the multi-faceted tale that is Cinderella!
