Item Description

"Unlock the Future" is a collaborative piece between Bahamian papermaker and bookbinder Sonia Farmer and the entire student body at the Lyford Cay International School. Each student first wrote and illustrated their visions for the future on pieces of paper. In groups, they worked with Sonia to make a large format nagashizuki-style paper, first taking turns hand-beating raw kozo fiber into pulp, and then working together to form sheets of paper measuring 60" by 96" inches. They stuck their visions for the future, as well as decorative key-shaped elements, onto the final wet sheet to dry as one unit. With the resulting fifteen sheets, Sonia has made a hardcover accordion book that gathers these individual visions into a collective hope driven by upcoming generations. Featuring a cover design by Gabrielle Kemp, the book holds the keys to unlocking our future.

Sonia Farmer is the founder of Poinciana Paper Press, a small and independent press located in Nassau, The Bahamas, which produces handmade and limited edition chapbooks of Caribbean literature and promotes the crafts of book arts through workshops and creative collaborations. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout Nassau including at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas. She is the author of several self-published chapbooks and her poetry has won the 2011 Prize in the Small Axe Literary Competition and has appeared in various journals. She holds a BFA in Writing from Pratt institute and is currently pursuing her MFA studies in Book Arts at the University of Iowa.
