Item Description
The second graders this semester began a deep study on immigration and the Spanish and Mexican influence on the Bay Area. This year's art auction project was inspired by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The second graders created their own self-portraits after learning about Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo's visit to San Francisco in 1931. Both artists were deeply moved by California's abundance of natural resources. Many of the paintings of both artists created here in the Bay Area included the “rich natural resources” California has to offer, such as vegetables, fruits, plants, trees, and flowers. In this project, the second-grade students were asked to portray themselves with the natural resources they most appreciated about California.
