Item Description
The Living Playground
by Erik Ohlsen
Illustrations by Snezana Grncaroska
Grandmother Tree with her community of magical animals and fairies wants to help children learn and grow. They create a living playground and fill it with special powers for children to discover. What will children learn there?
The Living Playground was born out of an ecological design of a natural playground for Sunridge, a K-8 Waldorf-inspired school located in Sebastopol, California. Many of the elements of the playground, designed by Permaculture Artisans, one of StoryScapes sister companies, are represented in this book. Along with the story and beautiful illustrations, you can find the actual design for the proposed playground inside the book.
Sunridge School wants a playground that is integrated with the ecosystem and helps connect children to the natural elements. It also needs to be a regular playground with slides, climbing structures, and a sandbox. We created this story to accompany the playground as a “design narrative” for students to learn about various animals and plants that inspired the many play habitats and elements that will be in the playground when it is built.
While developing the story, we realized that the entire planet is a living playground. The plants, animals, and ecosystems have a lot to teach us about caring peacefully for each other and the earth. We hope you enjoy this book and that you also get out into nature after you read it, to see your own living playground.
