Item Description

Join us for a fabulous Women's Literary Evening with Shanthi Sekaran, author of "Lucky Boy."

Enjoy drinks and a scrumptious dinner, mingle with friends, and talk with the author about her writing. After dinner, Sekaran will read from "Lucky Boy," engage in a Q+A, and sign books.

Each ticket includes a copy of "Lucky Boy," which will be distributed in advance of the dinner.

From Amazon: "'Lucky Boy,' an Amazon Best Book of January 2017, presents two very different American stories, tied together by the fate of a child. When Soli Castro-Valdez leaves her small Mexican village for the United States, she endures the difficult journey but arrives pregnant and undocumented. Meanwhile, Kavya Reddy, whose parents immigrated to the US from India, is living a more peaceful life with her dot.com-employed husband in Berkeley. Unable to have a child, Kavya becomes a foster parent—and when Soli winds up in immigrant detention, her son Ignacio winds up with Kavya. But the story has just begun..." A Booklist starred review calls "Lucky Boy" a "deeply compassionate exploration of the emotional toll of infertility, the insidious ways in which class divides us, the weight of social judgment, and the explosive touch-point of today's headlines regarding illegal immigration ... [Sekaran delivers] penetrating insights into the intangibles of motherhood and indeed, all humanity."

BIO: Shanthi Sekaran's second novel, Lucky Boy, was released in January 2017. The Chicago Tribune said that “Sekaran’s book invites the reader to engage empathetically with thorny geopolitical issues that feel organic and fully inhabited by her finely rendered characters.” Sekaran's other writing has appeared in The New York TimesCanteen Magazine, Huffington Post and New California Writing. She teaches creative writing at California College of the Arts and lives in Berkeley with her husband and two children.
