Item Description
This birdhouse is designed for chickadees and wrens and is crafted from the bark of white birch and ipe wood. The technical name for white birch is Betula papyrifera, suggestive of its other common name, paper birch. Ranging from Alaska south to about Pennsylvania, white birch is considered a pioneer species, invading areas cleared by fire. The bark is resistant to decomposition; often remaining intact after the wood within has rotted away.
This one-room birdhouse features solid hardwood flooring with an integrated floor drain system. The floor assembly is removable for cleaning. Easy entrance is provided by an 11/8” opening that also provides egress to locally sourced nesting material, food, and outhouse facilities. Double-walled construction, consisting of white birch bark and galvanized steel, separated by acrylic latex insulation, provide for temperature stabilization and security. Soffit vents across from the entryway allow for cross ventilation. An integrated stainless steel limb hook is provided for hanging.

Suitable for outdoor use.
Additional notes on birch and ipe wood if you are curious:
Birch bark can be used as a fire starter since it readily burns at high temperature, and was usd extensively by Native Americans as a writing material and in construction of containers and boxes. Ipe, of the genus Handroanthus, known for its high strength and weather resistance, is commonly used for outdoor decking and furniture. The beachside ipe boardwalk along Coney Island in New York City lasted 25 years before needing replacement.
