Commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this vase is based on a hand-colored, engraved illustration of "October." The illustration was featured in The Flower Garden Display'd from Peter Casteels, a flemish artist (1684-1749), who illustrated the famed Kensington nursery of Robert Furber: London native, artist, author, and horticulturist. The book served to describe flowers that bloom each month of the year and offer suggestions for their cultuvation, and allows modern readers insight into 18th century horticulure.
