For Kids
Item Description
Science Birthday Party
Jenny Hoffman, mother of Cedar (jade room), Zephyr (amber room), and Ember (blue room), professor of physics at Harvard, specializing in properties of materials at low temperatures.
I will come to somebody's home (or other venue) with a set of science demonstrations, as well as liquid nitrogen and milk, sugar, and other supplies for making instant ice cream.
Example science demonstrations:
- Materials are more brittle at low T: children can smash cold pennies with a hammer and see the zinc inside
- Metals are more conductive at low T: drop magnets through a room-temperature copper tube vs. cooled copper tube, and see the difference in how slowly they fall
- Gases shrink at low T: fit dozens of fully inflated balloons into a small box of liquid nitrogen, then watch them re-expand as they are pulled out (like clowns in a circus car)
The entertainment, including the ice cream-making, would last ~45 minutes.
Could work for up to 20 kids, best for ages 6+ (lower el+)
Item Special Note
Caveat: I will be out of town from mid-June through August. I am available the majority of weekends throughout the school year, but not every single weekend.
Item is for CMS Families ONLY
