Item Description

Mud on your toes, wind in your hair, and a pen in hand....

A Nature Writing Workshop: How to Find Inspiration and Hope in Writing About Nature

Published author and FSP parent Caitlin Shetterly will give a 3 hour writing workshop to a family or small group (multi generational, ages 12 and up encouraged, 2-6 people max).

In the workshop, participants will gather at a mutually agreed upon time in some setting that is beautiful and outside in the greater Portland area: Wolfe’s Neck State Park or Bradbury Mountain; the FSP Outdoor Classroom or Mackworth Island, perhaps. We will then sit down at a picnic table or gathering spot and go through a series of writing exercises aimed at slowing down and looking carefully at the outside world in order to write about it. The group will discuss the history of nature writing and role of the nature writer in today's world. We will discuss the differences between activism and storytelling and where the lines blur.  Participants should arrive open and ready to write what comes to them without self judgement and in any form that feels best.

Shetterly is the author of the three books Fault Lines: Stories of Divorce (The Putnam Berkley Group, 2001, an indie bestseller) and Made for You and Me: Going West, Going Broke, Finding Home (Voice, 2011), and the recently published  Modified (Putnam 2016) a journey into the controversial and intriguing GMO debate.   Modified was named one of the "Best Books of 2016" by Publishers Weekly and by Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop. Shetterly has written for the New York Times, Elle Magazine,  O: The Oprah Magazine, Medium.com and CNN.com. She has been a regular contributor to both NPR and PRI.
