Item Description
Italian
Italian Students in grades K-5 have Italian classes once a week for 45 minutes. Teachers introduce topics such as the family, ordering in a restaurant, giving directions.
In grades 4-8 grammar rules are also discussed. The main focus is on class participation and conversation. The main objective is to have students walk away with basic phrases and be able to have a conversation in Italian. Classes include teacher modeling, partner work and group work (preparation and presentation of skits using new vocabulary learned.)
Spanish
Our Spanish curriculum is standard based and provides our students with the exposure to a foreign language that will enable them to communicate effectively and interact with cultural competence to achieve their maximum potential for success in a competitive, multicultural world. Students study a wide variety of topics that are appropriate to their age and stage.
For example:
- Kindergarteners and first graders learn the basic names of colors and shapes
- Second graders build on their knowledge of colors and shapes to recognize them in everyday objects
- As students move forward they begin to orally string sentences together using these words and eventually in written form as well.
- Students learn culturally appropriate language, which allows students to make connections and comparisons between languages and cultures. Spanish grammar is introduced early on in order to successfully communicate in linguistically and culturally appropriate ways.
In addition, to the above-required standards SSPP students learn the following:
- Students learn music and dances of Latin America
- Students learn about the holiday celebrations of Latin America, which are celebrated in the US and in Latin America (Hispanic Heritage Month, Day of the Dead, Christmas, Easter, and Cinco de Mayo, Our Lady of Guadalupe.)
- Students continue to draw comparisons between Latin American culture/ holidays/traditions/celebrations with their own culture.
- Students learn about religious celebrations and saints of Latin America and Spain.
- Students learn about the history of Latin America and Spain.
Our Spanish program is one of the ways we prepare our students to be competent and successful citizens of the world.
