Item Description
Estate piece. World War I bronze service medal. This medal was gifted to a physician who cared for the individual who presumably was awarded this medal.
Front of medal: Winged Victory holding a shield and sword.
Back of medal: "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION" in all capital letters curved along the top of the medal. Curved along the bottom are six stars, three on either side of the center column of seven staffs wrapped in a cord. The staff is on top of a shield with a "U" on the left side and a "S" on the right side. On the left side of the staff are listed, in descending order: FRANCE, ITALY, SERBIA, JAPAN, MONTENEGRO, RUSSIA, GREECE. On the right side of the staff are listed, in descending order: GREAT BRITAIN, BELGIUM, BRAZIL, PORTUGAL, RUMANIA (spelled with a "U") and CHINA.
Rainbow-colored ribbon is still attached, as is the pin to attach the medal to clothing. Five bronze bars cross the ribbon are are labeled as follows, in descending order:
1) MONTDIDIER-NOYON
2) AISNE-MARNE
3) St. MIHIEL
4) MEUSE-ARGONNE
5) DEFENSIVE SECTOR
Each bar has a star to the left and to the right of each title.
The WWI Victory Medal, with its campaign streamer, was awarded during the period 1917-18. The streamer is a double rainbow symbolizing the dawn of a new era and the calm which follows the storm.
