Item Description

Signed Navajo Sand Painting by Wilson Price, Sr. and is entitled ''Clown & Mountain''. It depicts the dance known as ''Nine Day Night Chant''. According to the note from Mr. Price on the back "Clown & Mountain. The clown is dressed for a nine days ceremony. He also aids in healing he sick. He is dancing in the Monument Valley area. Sands are natural colored rocks (grounded)".  Navajo sand paintings, also called dry paintings, are called "places where the gods come and go" in the Navajo language. They are used in curing ceremonies in which the gods' help is requested for harvests and healing. Traditionally they are "dry" but have in modern times adopted adhesive to hold the sand in place so that the artwork can be saved and displayed. It measures 13"x13".
