One-of-a-kind!
Emilie Houssart is a Dutch painter and printmaker based in Poughkeepsie, NY. She received her BA from the University of Durham, UK, and spent three years at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, studying classical painting and teaching on a scholarship award, graduating in 2006. Since then Emilie has continued to teach while developing her own work in Italy, London, Austin, TX, and since 2013 in the Hudson Valley, where her studio and family are based.
As a painter, Emilie works predominantly in oils, engaging with the history of the medium in varied contexts. She also makes etchings, monotypes, drawings and sculptures, with a strong affinity for natural and discarded materials. Her work draws from timeless human experiences of nature and existence, often threaded with a sense of absurdity.
She is currently working on a series of paper pieces concerned with ideas of chaos and our attempts to rationalize and contain it, and distortions of lives over time.
It was her great pleasure to work with Austin Shakespeare recently as Scenic Designer, and with the Yorke Trust on their opera productions, as part of a long love affair with all things backstage.
Works by Emilie Houssart are held in collections across Europe and the States.
