Item Description
Intarsia is a three-dimensional mosaic or sculpture in wood. The process involves cutting, carving and shaping individual pieces of wood using different species to provide the colors desired. There are no stains or paint used, except for white which is given a whitewash as there are no stable white woods in nature. The various pieces of wood are hand-cut based upon a design pattern, shaped, sanded and glued together. Sometimes areas of the pattern are raised with shims to provide additional depth. The project is then treated with Danish oil to enhance and help stabilize the colors. Once completed a final coat of satin polyurethane is applied to protect the finished piece. Each piece is a one of a kind creation and no two are alike. Every piece will vary due to the difference in woods used and their grain. This piece is approximately 11" x11"
