Item Description

Seated sloth bear, oil study on canvas. Oil paint plus oil pastel. This is one of the sloth bears rescued by Wildlife SOS and resides in the Agra Bear Rescue Facility. This was painted just for this WSOS auction.

The Agra Bear Rescue Facility is the largest sloth bear rescue facility in the world. Established in 1999 by Wildlife SOS in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, it currently houses over 210 sloth bears as well as many other species of wildlife in large forested enclosures with ponds and shady trees. The bears have access to large socialization enclosures where the behavior and personality of each bear is closely monitored by the Wildlife SOS vets and staff. Wildlife SOS is extremely grateful to its individual donors and supporters. It is thanks to their support that they are able to do the work that they do.

About the Artist:

I was born during WW2 in Victoria, British Columbia, which is now my home and the view from my window by the sea is inspirational and stimulating with a heck of a view looking south across the Salish Sea to the U.S. Olympic Mountains.

I'm from generations of artists from mother's family. I relished the long happy hours watching her paint and in receiving help and encouragement with my fledgling efforts.

Professionally, I began working with clay sculpting, inevitably returning to painting with oils. My paintings are non-toxic and chemical-free and painted on canvas. Unable to tolerate the usual painting items, I strictly stick to non-toxic pigments and walnut oil-based paints, and use only soap and water to clean brushes.
