Item Description

This orginal pen-and-ink cartoon, created and signed by Harry Lyons (1930-1989), on of the best known illustrators in Hawaii. Harry Lyons' art has become extremely scarce, since the artists death in 1989. It measures 17.5"x21.5" including the midnight black matting.

After Harry Lyons’ long and successful career as a political cartoonist for the Honolulu Advertiser, he moved to Kona with his wife and started his own publication called Harry Lyons’ Kona Coast. A monthly “rag” on the goings-on around Kona and current state of affairs in general on the Big Island of Hawaii. Now imagine being the editor-in-chief with both journalistic, as well as well as cartoonist skills, and that was pretty much the content of the Kona Coast. Harry’s editorial, aptly named “Lyons’ on the Loose”, would dish out “anykine’ wala’au gossip” that was happening around the Big Island. Right down to who the local police chief at the time was having an affair with. Harry wen’ jus’ geeve ’em. And with that, in his unique artistic style, he’d draw-up cartoons to help illustrate what his point was. On top of that, many of the paid commercial advertisements in the Kona Coast were illustrated by Harry, again with his signature cartoonist style.~from tastyislandhawaii.com
