Item Description

The print was originally a unique composition combining Booker's woodblock prints with hand painted elements through the Chine Collé process. The imagery was translated into lithography for the edition and hand printed on a combination of Thai Mulberry, Gampi, Japanese Kozo, Yatsuo, and Japanese Mulberry papers. Each of the eight pieces is then coated with glue, hand-cut, carefully assembled, and adhered to Somerset Velvet through the etching press.

With the help of shop technicians and interns, we have also produced more than 50 unique prints with Chakaia. Creating compositional balance and weight through layering textures and shapes are key elements in the structure of Chakaia's sculptural work. The translation of her process into print allows for the incorporation of vibrant color, transparency, and flatness into the work.

The Chine Collé process allows Chakaia to construct the imagery similar to her sculptures; with each piece as an opposable appendage, positioned meticulously to create the whole. Chakaia's newest body of prints incorporate heavily embossed paper to enhance the surface of her prints even further. Her embossments are woodblocks carved with ready-made bits from an industrial router; similar to her tire sculptures as she slices and compresses each printed Chine Collé, she creates a new variation.
