Bio:
Jonathan Saenz was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. He began drawing since he can remember and was introduced to airbrushing as a teenager. He studied airbrushing for the next several years on his own and at a local community college before deciding to study art in college. The University of Arizona, located in his hometown of Tucson, seemed like a logical choice and it was here that he was first introduced to oil painting. Recognizing the versatility and richness of oil paint, Jonathan began to transition from airbrushing to oils as his preferred medium.
After graduating, Jonathan moved to San Diego, California, but struggled to find a career in art and became interested in teaching as a profession. In 2000, he began teaching middle school English in San Diego. Seven years later, while working at a Charter School, he was asked to teach a new elective art class. The timing coincided with a renewed interest in painting and the discovery of Watts Atelier in Encinitas, California. At Watts, Jonathan learned the fundamentals of drawing and painting that was absent from the more conceptual based approach at his university studies. After three years of study at Watts, Jonathan began looking to exhibit his artwork. He has displayed his work in local shows in San Diego and Tucson. He was also asked to teach painting classes at Watts Atelier.
Drawing inspiration from the lineage of great representational painters such as Sargent, Zorn and Waterhouse and from his studies at Watts Atelier, Jonathan’s work centers around figurative compositions and portraits in contemporary settings. He continues to develop his craft and explore new subjects and compositions.
