Item Description
John J. Colony, II, founder of Historic Harrisville, Inc. and current president of the Board of Trustees, will provide 4 to 6 people with a one-hour, guided tour of Harrisville's village core. The tour of the picturesque mill town will include homes of the town's founding fathers and millworkers, as well as the historic textile mills and supporting strutures. The tour will conclude with lunch at the Harrisville General Store. Tour date and time can be flexible, but should be scheduled at least three weeks in advance.
From 1820-1970, these textile mills manufactured woolen cloth and were the lifeblood of the community. As much as 45% of the village population worked in the mills, while the countryside supplied wool for spinning, wood for the boilers, and food for the population. A National Historic Landmark. Historic Harrsiville's strategic business plan for this place is a model for the state and nation's preservation movements.
