Item Description

Title & Artist:  "Felled" – by Karen Gourley Lehman

Medium & Size:  Photographic print and polyurethane sealer on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  As an artist whose medium is photography, I respond to what I see, things I care about and notice, and stuff in my life that I want to make visual notes of, all to save and remember later. I photographed, over time, in different seasons and in different light, a particular tree near where I live. I went there after a period of absence, and it was gone. All that’s there now is the stump, which has a unique beauty of its own.

Artist Biography:  Karen Gourley Lehman has been teaching Photography and Graphic Design at Marblehead High School since 2005, and is co-sponsor of the National Art Honor Society chapter there. Prior to Marblehead High School, she was at Salem High School, where she taught Photography, Graphic Design, Portfolio class, and Fundamentals in Art. In addition, she founded and sponsored the Salem High School chapter of the National Art Honor Society.

From 1986 to 2000, Ms. Lehman was on the faculty at Montserrat College of Art as Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. From 2000 to 2008, she was on the summer faculty of Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, ME, a world-renowned conservatory for photographers and filmmakers, as Photography Instructor in the Young Artists Program. On and off since 2009, she has taught summer photography classes for all ages at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs, MA. Ms. Lehman has been included in Who's Who Among America's Teachers more than once, and her students have consistently won awards for their work over the past thirty years, including at the national level.

Ms. Lehman holds a BS in Graphic Design and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography. For many years, before becoming a full-time high school instructor, she was principal of a graphic design and photography studio in the Boston area, with a broad range of clients. She continues to produce, exhibit, and win awards for her own work, which includes both traditional darkroom and digital photography.
