Item Description

Title & Artist:  "Rainbow Cod" – by Ellen Garvey and Mary Taddie

Medium & Size:  Blown glass shards, stained glass, and grout on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  We both work with glass, but in very different ways, so it was fun to combine our passions on this project. We chose a colorful and diverse palette of glass from Ellen's past projects (without getting cut!), and Ellen slumped and fused them into sections of the fish profile. Then Mary did her magic—she cut the glass to fit between Ellen's slumped glass and used tinted grout to fill in between some of the glass. We were thinking of naming the cod "Double Trouble"…after the two artists!

Artist Biographies:

Ellen: I have been blowing glass for several years. I signed up for a glassblowing class as a way to escape from my stressful and demanding career in high tech. It wasn't long before I was hooked. It's hot, dirty, expensive, and demanding—perfect! I am a juried Artist Member of both the Marblehead Arts Association and Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck (of the Rocky Neck Art Colony) in Gloucester, MA; a two-term board member of the Marblehead Festival of Arts; and a finance committee member and past board member of the Salem Arts Association.

Mary: I have been creating mosaic art for over 15 years. I love the color, texture, and nature of tile, glass, marble, travertine, Italian smalti, and vitreous glass! I've used a variety of substrates for my art. I recently found that using surfboards as a canvas can produce exciting new art expression. These pieces can add a dramatic accent to interior spaces and exterior gardens. I am Vice President of the Salem Arts Association and a juried Artist Member of the Marblehead Arts Association. At my studio, Little Harbor Studios in Marblehead, I host other artists and offer mosaic classes.

Hosting Business:  "Rainbow Cod" is on display at Hestia Creations, 13 Hawkes St., Marblehead, MA.
