ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR:

"Laurie Cockerell and her brother Travis Dougherty decided to write a children's book about Sam Houston after their mother discovered a speech written by their great uncle in 1939 for the Daughters of the War of 1812. Dr Joseph McCallie's delightful account of his not-so-distant relative, Sam Houston, captivated students in Travis' children's school when read aloud to the class. Inspired by "Uncle Joe's" folksy tale of one of Texas' greatest heroes, Laurie and Travis set out to create a children's book that would introduce one of the most important characters in our country's history to our next generation.

Laurie Cockerell was born and raised in Texas. She holds degrees from Texas Tech University and the University of Texas at Arlington. Laurie taught in elementary schools in Texas and Hawaii, and has worked extensively with children both as a professional and volunteer. A mother of four, Laurie lives in Forth Worth, Texas and is currently homeschooling her youngest while enjoying the exciting lives of her adult children.

Travis Dougherty was also born and raised in Texas (in fact, in the room next door to Laurie!). Travis received his undergraduate and master's degree in architecture from Texas Tech University. The father of two, Travis is actively involved as a soccer coach and many other aspects of his children's lives. He currently resides in Houston, Texas where he works as an architect."

REVIEWS:

Format: Hardcover
"Magnificent Sam" is a wonderful children's book that tells about the great Sam Houston. The artwork is bright and colorful. The illustator paid careful attention to details in his works. This is a book that every person from Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas should own. Sam Houston, the first President of the Republic of Texas and leader of the Battle at San Jacinto, was as big a character in real life as the great State of Texas. Teachers and homeschooling parents, this is the book you will want to purchase when you are teaching about TX history."

5 STAR REVIEWS!!

"Excellent resource for teachers and parents to teach complex issues such as Eminent Domain and Taxation to children. The book explains these concepts in a way that makes it fun for younger and older students to learn. It also has some questions categorized for younger and older students to stimulate discussion after each short story. This would be a great study guide for teachers and parents of home schooled children to teach topics that were important to our Founding Fathers and are very current in our society today.
Fun, catchy rhymes with great lessons!, October 14, 2010"

This review is from: "Founders' Fables" (Paperback)
"I purchased this book as a curriculum supplement (I home school) and instead of stopping at the first story, my 7 year old wanted to finish the whole book the first day!! We now carry it in the diaper bag and read it whenever we're at a waiting room or waiting to pick Daddy up. :) Fun stories, catchy rhymes, memorable characters, and important patriotic lessons make "Founder's Fables" a must read for everyone (I know some adults who need to read it!)
Thank you so much Laurie for your amazing talent of presenting very deep lessons in fun rhymes that simplify the subject material for a child to understand!"

"Both my kids (10 yrs girl and 11 yrs boy) picked this book up and read it with no arm-twisting from old mom. When my daughter's friend was at the house one day, she read the first fable and we all had a chance to talk about it for a few minutes. Several times after that I heard the kids referring to it and talking about our government and debt. (They don't appreciate it, that's one thing I know!) This book contains 10 rhyming fables about our American founding principles. As fables, they each of course have a moral/lesson. We appreciate the discussion questions included with each one. All the pictures and pages are bright and eye-catching, matching well with each story. The rhymes are skillfully written; I was a little concerned about that before I got the book. But thank goodness, there are no contrived, unnaturally twisted sentences in a desperate attempt to just get that last word to rhyme!! No, it's really truly well done and a pleasure to read."
