Item Description

Ross Travis, a 3 star recruit as a basketball player out of high school, played that sport for Penn State from 2011 to 2015.  Travis solidified himself among the top rebounders in the Big Ten the last two seasons, finishing fourth in the conference as a sophomore (7.4 rpg) and junior (7.0). A strong finisher at the rim who is also an effective scorer on floaters and jumpers from 12-15 feet, he has worked hard to refine his jump shot and improve his shooting from range. He has also proven to be one of the team's top defenders with the athleticism and versatility to guard several positions from a point-guard to a post player. A good ball handler and passer who runs the floor and plays with a high motor, he quickly earned the moniker "junkyard dog" from coach Patrick Chambers and the Academic All-Big Ten honoree has endeared himself to Nittany Lion fans with his all-out hustle and constant energy on the floor.

After graduation, his first love of football, even though he hadn't played that sport since his freshman year of high school, won out and he was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Chiefs in August of 2015.

Ask why he thought switching sports could work for him he said, “I was a big rebounder at Penn State, just going up and getting the ball, being aggressive towards the ball.  I think that’s what the coaches see, go up and get the ball. But a lot of the footwork stuff carried over from basketball.”

Former Chiefs star tight end Tony Gonzalez also made the jump from the hardwood.  Travis has been issued Gonzalez' number with the Chiefs, No. 88.
