Artist Statement/ Bio
Sarah Sanford b. 1974 in Michigan is an artist printmaker living and working in Bonny Doon, CA. Her work combines photography, printmaking, drawing and installation to create hidden worlds of biological landscapes and scientific abstractions. For over a decade she has been exploring the physical nature of light. She is interested in the ephemeral and ethereal aspects of light as a means for studying time, space and chance. Sanford captures these transient images through digital photography. Incorporating the process of photo-silkscreen with various digital techniques, she uses the contrast between darkness and light to create abstractions of space reminiscent of both natural and human landscapes. Her images reference medical scans, x-rays and microscopy as well as celestial bodies.
Sanford received her Master of Fine Art in Printmaking from the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland in 2003. Her prints have been featured in galleries nationally and internationally, including the Rubicon Gallery in Ireland, Euroart Gallery in London, and a number of galleries in California. Sanford has received numerous awards and recognitions including the Chalmer-Jervise Prize from the Royal Scottish Academy. Recently her work was featured in the international Art and Science magazine, E-Squared. Sanford works out of her studio in Bonny Doon and is a lecturer in the Art Department at the University of California Santa Cruz.
