Item Description

Title & Artist:  "Not a Flounder" – by Annabel Wildrick

Medium & Size:  Paper clay and acrylic paint on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  I'm a 3D artist by nature. I LOVE color and adore painting, but I find it much more satisfying to apply color to 3-dimensional forms than to flat surfaces. Hence the addition of paper clay to the formerly flat wood cod. Never heard of paper clay? I hadn't either, until four or five years ago. I'm in love. Think of it as a cross between paper maché and clay. After I've mixed the fluffy white material with water, I have about 20 minutes to work with it before it begins to harden. Once fully hard, the material can be sanded, filed, drilled, sawed—essentially anything one can do with wood. And, of course, the 3D surface is available to decorate in any way I like. FUN!

Artist Biography:  A native New Yorker, Annabel spent her childhood going to museums and galleries all over the city. Her writer/photographer father encouraged her creative endeavors, supplying her with art materials, space, and time to work, as well as after-school art history classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lucky girl!

Both before and after college, Annabel lived in Venice, Italy, where she studied glassblowing with masters on the island of Murano. At Pitzer College, she focused on glass and clay, with a bit of stone carving, welding, and plaster casting on the side. In 1985, she spent a happy summer furthering her glass studies on a former tree farm in Washington State, at the Pilchuck Glass School.

Having fallen in love with the Pacific Northwest, Annabel moved to Seattle and, for the next four summers, went back to Pilchuck as a teaching assistant and Italian translator working with many fun and fabulous artists, including masters Lino Tagliapietra, Pino Signoretto, William Morris, Benjamin Moore, and Dale Chihuly. Between summers, she worked as a production glassblower at the Glass Eye Studio, making Mount St. Helens glass objects.

After 14 years in Seattle, many years of blowing glass, and showing and selling her sculptures, Annabel decided to pursue another passion—teaching. Fast-forward to 2017: Annabel has now lived on the North Shore for 18 years (is that possible??), is the mother of a 17-year-old daughter and a 21-year-old son, is happily married to her husband of nearly 23 years, and has been teaching art to 4- to 14-year-olds at an independent school for 13 years. Yahoo!

Item Special Note

Pick-up of purchased cods will be on Wednesday evening, July 5. Winning bidder will receive a notification email with information on pick-up time and location.

If winning bidder requires shipping, winner's credit card will be charged a separate $24.95 fee to cover USPS ground and handling. Shipping is available within the U.S. only and must be requested within 7 days after receipt of the notification email.

Any cod purchased via "Buy Now" will remain on display at the hosting business through the end of the auction, and will be available for pick-up as detailed in the winning bidder notification email.

If winning bidder has not picked up cod (or provided shipping address) within 30 days after the close of the auction, cod will become the property of Marblehead Festival of Arts, Inc.
