Item Description

This amazing set, dating from the early 1800s, includes 14 chairs, a large drop-leaf dining table and 2 smaller, add-on drop-leaf tables. The entire set is from the American South, specifically the Beech Grove Plantation, Mississippi or the Catalpa Plantation in Louisiana and displays an inherent folksy charm arising out of pre-Civil War Southern Plantation culture. The absence of uniformity in the appearance and dimensions of the chairs and the lack of sophistication in the overall construction of the chairs reflects the homegrown charm of Southern plantation culture when attempts were made by plantation owners of limited means to mimic the refined products of Europe and the Northern American States owned by their wealthier Yankee cousins. Because of their lack of sophistication, such pieces are highly sought after and valued by collectors of Americana and hence the value of this furniture is somewhat higher than similar but more sophisticated examples from the North. The provenance of these pieces adds immeasurably to their value.

A summary of the appraisal, by Wayne Morioka is as follows:

1. A set of fourteen (14) American late Classical style gondola dining chairs, Louisiana or Mississippi ca. 1825-1850, each with arched crest over a curved vase outline back splat, the fitted black leather upholstered slip seats flanked by curved sides rails, raised on sabre front legs.
Heights: Varying from approx. 30 3/4 to 31 1/2 inches

2. One (1) American Louisiana ca. 1840 drop-leaf rectangular dining
table with two side single plank drop leaves supported on gate legs,
the center table top and leaves all raised on tapered cylindrical legs
with ring turned accents and ball feet resting on casters.
Height of table: approx. 28 inches
Size of table top with two extended leaves: 47 3/4 X 69 1/2 inches

3. Two (2) American Louisiana ca. 1840 side tables/dining table
extensions, each with gate leg supporting a single drop-leaf with
rounded corners, the tops raised on slightly tapered cylindrical legs
with ring turned accents and ball feet resting on casters.
Condition: Some wear and discoloration of finish from use. A split to
plank top of one side table/dining table extension where two planks
were originally joined. Casters added slightly later.
Height of side tables/dining table extensions: approx. 28 inches
Two sizes of side tables/dining table extensions tops: 45 1/2 X 48
inches and 45 X 48 inches
