Item Description

These beautiful silkscreen lithographs papercut by Swiss artist B.A.M. Schwyn.  Both biblical theme pieces, are 36 x 50 cm and framed.  This is a limited edition on French, hand-made Rives paper, numbered and signed by the artist.

Papercutting is a unique and unusual dying art form, developed during the Middle Ages, it flourished in the Swiss Alps and was commonly practiced by peasants in isolated chalets. Such Papercuts typically depicted cows, goats, chamois, chalets, flowers and little trees. The often repeated theme was pastoral and decorative.

This basic technique was further developed by a few talented artists in the last 100 years and expanded into a rare art form that is Expressionistic at times, decorative at others. The fine detail of such works by the few masters of the art is usually associated with painting only. The pictures are cut 95% by fine scissors and 5% of the time by pen-knife.

The unique technique which permits no corrections requires a great deal of discipline from the artist, as well as painstaking patience, at least 100 hours of work. The rich and ornate expressions were created spontaneously as the paper was cut freehand, without prior design. Out of the obscurity and darkness of the black paper a flash of new and previously unseen light emerges. The black and white contrasts provide dramatically rich and powerful impressions of Old Testament themes.
