Item Description
This item is for a 1 night during a 2 night (or more) stay at Akiko's Bed & Breakfast, Hakalau, Hawaii on the Big Island in the beautiful Mango Tree cottage.
The Mango Tree cottage (for one or two people) is a 16 x 20 room , fully open to the outdoors, and surrounded by screen. The cottage is one of 2 alternate energy cottages (Banana Patch Cottage is the other) and is fueled by one solar panel. Guests hear the winds, the rains bouncing on the tin roof, the cascading leaves, the crickets, the falling “torpedo” avocados and ripe mangoes, when in season. There is a comfortable reading chair, a nice teak table with two chairs and a comfortable queen size bed. The shower and toilet are in an adjacent building, and is shared if there is someone staying in the Banana Cottage. There is also a kitchenette with a gas stove, small refrigerator, pots, dishes & a place to sit and eat. Living in the Mango Tree Cottage is an experience of a lifetime. Magical, restful place!
During your stay, you are welcome to assist with the farm on the 2-acre grounds, participate in daily sitting meditation practice, attend tai chi & chi quong classes with Akiko, go to an occasional dinner, movie or outing with other guests and pursue your own explorations around the island... whatever you like.
Breakfast includes fruits from the garden, from our Wailea Hakalau FoodSHARE and Hilo Farmers Market, homemade breads and locally made jams and fresh eggs from friends in the community.
This Bed & Breakfast is run by Akiko Masuda, a 3rd generation Japanese woman, born in Honolulu in the 40’s, long before freeways, shopping malls, email, Blackberrys, and cell phones. Akiko is a writer of children's books, student of tai chi, hula, and zen meditation, and makes some "mean" French toast. She is storyteller, hostess, housekeeper, and loves to maintain the garden, citrus orchard and breadfruit grove in the backyard. She is also president of the Wailea Village Historic Preservation Community.
