Item Description
Artwork? Tool? Artifact? Or all three?
This is an intricately designed, unique, 100+-year-old copper stamp from Java. Copper stamps are used to apply hot wax onto batik fabric and making the stamps themselves is a complicated process. Designers prepare and fold copper strips into pieces that are placed into the pattern design. Much cutting, bending and clamping is done in order to form the copper strips into a template that shows the pattern design. Workers then hammer and tap these motifs onto a metal frame. The stamp is then taken to be dipped into a solution of melted tree lacquer. Once dry and hardened, this tree lacquer holds all the strips into place so they do not move during the hot wax stamping process.
This stamp can be used in batik making or acquired for its beautiful craftsmanship.
This stamp measures approximately 5 inches x 7 inches and comes complete with a stand to display it on.
