Item Description
This item is a large (approximately 64"x81") and delicate vintage Ngatu (known as Kapa in Hawaii) from Tonga. It features the Tongan Coat of Arms and a illustration of the many ships that visit Tonga. Along the side is written "This is the national flag of Tonga" (translated by a local Tongan). The three swords represent the three dynasties or lines of the kings of Tonga. It was made in 1966 when the ruling monarch was Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. The Ngatu is a barkcloth made from paper mulberry tree bark by a laborious method of stripping, pounding and decorating with natural dyes. It has some tears and wear along the folds and in one of the corners.
