Item Description
This is most likely a fabulous Johan Tapp desk. It has beautiful architectural lines of, what is most likely East Indian rosewood or mahogany, and signature solid brass pulls that combine to present an incredibly handsome and timeless design. This piece was sold by Gump's of Honolulu in the 1930s or 1940s. It has 6 drawers, most likely monkeypod, hidden behind stylish cabinet doors and a middle drawer. It measures 30.5" high, 20.5" deep and 55.5" long. These types of vintage items are difficult to find nowadays and would make an elegant addition to any home.
Johan Tapp (1888-1939) was a Dutch designer who, in 1913, moved to Chicago to live and design furniture. His furniture designs, many with a midcentury modern look, were manufactured and sold by various companies including Gump's. He is known as one of the greatest of American furniture designers.
About the Honolulu branch of S. & G. Gump of San Francisco: Constructed in Waikiki, across the street from the newly completed Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the store catered to the affluent traveler and the upper stratosphere of Honolulu Society, who were justly proud of the fact that Hawaii had a Gumps before Los Angeles. Featuring an outstanding collection of antiques, jewelry and objets d'art from both Europe and Asia, the store was labeled "a treasure house in the Pacific" and upon its opening in 1929, the newspapers claimed it as "the latest addition to the art life of Honolulu". ~ Hart Wood:Architectural Regionalism in Hawaii
It has 2 places where the trim has been damaged. See photos.
