Item Description

Gift certificate is good for up to five free bags of shavings, or a free pick-up load of chips or bark, or a free load of firewood trim ends.

Hedstrom Lumber Company, on the Gunflint Trail north of Grand Marais, MN, employs about 35 people and is among the largest private employers in Cook County. Annual production is 15 million board feet of lumber, most of which is kiln dried and finished. Products include timbers for timber frame construction, dimension lumber and pattern stock. Primary markets are in Minnesota and Wisconsin, although some specialty products are shipped as far as California.

From the beginning, Hedstrom Lumber has been woven deeply into the economic and social fabric of Cook County. In 1913, Andrew purchased from Ed Toftey a sawmill that was burned in a 1910 fire that destroyed most of the village of Tofte. The mill was moved to Grand Marais in winter using horses and sleighs. Then, with only hand tools, the wrecked mill was entirely rebuilt. Hedstrom Lumber got its official start on July 14, 1914, when the mill began sawing logs into lumber.

Hedstrom's uses every inch of every log that enters the mill. Bark and sawdust are burned as a heat source. The mill is 100% thermally self-sufficient. Quality chips are sold for paper production. Bark becomes a landscaping product. Sawdust is sold to pellet manufacturers. Any leftover waste materials are sold as fuel to other biomass facilities.

Item Special Note

The winning bidder must call to arrange to pick up wood products. The redemption value of the products may not exceed $50. The certificate expires September 30, 2018, and is not redeemable for cash.
