Item Description
This large bowl was handmade using a lathe by master wood turner Lou Pignolet from a large red cedar tree. Lou describes, "The red cedar log was donated by a student in one of my wood turning classes and came from southwestern Minnesota. The natural edge bowl measures 23" in diameter, 3.5" high, and has a wall thickness of 0.65". This end grain turned bowl is spectacular with red and pink colors, interesting circular lighter patterns, radial dark lines, and a contrasting cambium layer just below the bark. The bowl was turned from a cross section slab of the log (see image). The log was missing a piece on one side but that had happened years ago in the growing tree since the patina of the outer edge was similar to the rest of the log. This bowl has unusual colors and patterns and its large size makes it a collector's piece. I have displayed it on our dining room table and it lights up the entire room. The bowl has a natural tung oil/beeswax-walnut oil finish and is food safe, so it can be used for serving and displaying food or other items."
This bowl is shown on Lou's web site https://www.loupignoletbowls2.com/ with additional images and a more complete description. The web site also includes information on turning natural edged bowls. Lou also has a private wood turning experience and a gift certificate item in this auction.
