Item Description

Stuart Cove Nassau, Bahamas

Meet the legendary Stuart Cove for lunch or dinner in Nassau, Bahamas

Stuart Cove was born on the island of Nassau in the Bahamas and remains firmly rooted in the island. After university, he and a friend set up a dive shop on Eluthera Island, then he started Coral Harbor Divers. His life changed in 1979 when he accepted a job as a diver for the James Bond movie, For Your Eyes Only. He learned the movie business, taught the movie crew how to dive, took care of the sharks for the scenes, and helped built the largest aquarium in the world at that time.

In 1983, Stuart took over the diving concession at the prestigious Lyford Cay Club and in 1992 he acquired the South Ocean Golf and Beach Resort Dive Center, where Stuart Cove’s resides today. He married Michelle, a movie stunt double, who also worked in some of the James Bond movies and various commercials while raising their children.

Stuart Cove’s was built with the help of Hollywood. In time, the sets became dive sites for sport divers by attracting coral and became among the finest man-made reefs in the Bahamas. Popular shows like Flipper used Stuart Cove’s as their set. Through the years, the Cove’s dive center has developed into the top Bahamas site for commercials, television shows, movies, and documentaries. This is in no small part due to Stuart and Michelle’s knowledge and ability to meet the needs of the film crews they work with. The list of famous divers who have dived at Stuart Cove’s include a “Who’s Who of Diving”, movies stars, and famed researchers from around the world.

As result of his shark wrangling in various movies, Stuart went on to develop the world-famous Shark Dive that people from around the world come to experience at his resort. Stuart discovered that tonic immobility was a response that could be used to handle the sharks very easily. He developed shark feed techniques by working with the sharks himself. Stuart went on to work with Neptunic, using their chain-metal suits to protect divers who fed the sharks. The success of the Shark Dive and Feeding program was the result of many hours of experimentation underwater, as well as years of knowledge gained from growing up as a boy in the Bahamas. His operation expanded to four locations including Blue Adventures at Atlantis Resort and which still ranks #1 with tourists year after year.

Over the years, Stuart and Michelle sank 20 derelict wrecks in cooperation with the government of the Bahamas. By instituting mooring lines for ships, they maintained the quality of the reefs. They are passionate protectors of the coral reefs throughout the Bahamas and the Florida Keys, as well as the research and protection of sharks.
