Item Description

SAMSN’s monthly meetings are an integral part of the recovery services offered to men who are survivors of CSA.  Having completed an eight-week group these men automatically qualify as SAMSN members.  The monthly meetings are open to men who have completed at least one eight-week SAMSN support group for male survivors of CSA.

The aim of the monthly meetings is to provide an ongoing opportunity for men who have already engaged with SAMSN to continue their recovery from the effects of sexual abuse they experienced in childhood. The focus continues to be peer support and connection with others.  Participants will be familiar with this highly successful model having already participated in the eight-week groups.

The monthly groups focus on the effects of trauma on adults and emphasize the positive elements or aspects of recovery rather than dwelling on specific events of childhood trauma. This is done through discussion of a brief reading that is distributed by email beforehand and made available in hard copy at the meeting. The reading is briefly summarised by the professional facilitator at the beginning of the discussion so as not to intrude on the time available.

The meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month from 6.00pm to 9.00pm and are free to attend.

The format and tone is similar to the eight-week groups. That is;

  • the participants are seated in a circle
  • there are two facilitators
  • the meetings open and close with a brief statement from each member
  • discussions follow an informal conversational model
  • the opening comments cover how they have been travelling since the last meeting they attended and the closing comments provide feedback on the evening’s discussion
  • a set of rules provides a framework to ensure safety.

Your pledge of $1000 covers 2 x Professional Facilitators, venue hire, printed material and tea, coffee and biscuits.

This is classed as a donation, so you will be sent a tax-deductible receipt.
