Most people would be unaware that Cabernet Sauvignon has been planted in the Barossa since at least 1888. Barossa Cabernets are rich, full flavoured wines – a perfect fit into the Rockford stable. The fruit for this wine comes predominantly from vineyards along Rifle Range Road. The ‘Biscay’ soil of these vineyards is heavy clay, lending the wine its full flavour and earthy tones.

(Deep breath) What a wine! That black cracking Bay of Biscay soil running the length of Rifle Range Road has again delivered the goods, creating a wine that demonstrates the consistency of this special piece of dirt.

The 2012 Rifle Range Cabernet was always going to be a hard act to follow – it had it all. But I’m happy to report that the 2013 is superb, with a touch more tannin than the 2012. It’s definitely one to tuck away in the cellar.

If Shiraz is king of the Barossa then Cabernet Sauvignon in most certainly Crown Prince. The Barossa climate ripens Cabernet perfectly and creates a wine with silky smooth tannins, a plush, rich, full mouth feel and the unmistakable fruit flavours of Cabernet Sauvignon in its prime.

One of the most popular wines in the Rosé style and often credited with re-establishing chilled reds as a quality alternative to white wine.

The Alicante Bouchet is full of berry flavours which are slowly released as the wine adapts to room temperature. The strength of fruit can give it a slightly sweeter appeal and has a pleasant finish which can be dangerously morish.

The perfect drink for a lazy Sunday lunch by the sea – well that’s where we enjoy it anyway. Great with seafood, piquant salads or just by itself.

The Riesling is a pleasure to drink. Made in an old style it has a depth and balance that is not immediately obvious. A really light and clean colour belies what is in the glass. It smells of apricot and citrus – really fruity with strong acidic notes. The wine tastes thick and rich, with a seriously long finish. It is surprising in quality and character.

Given the obvious fruit and acidity it will go perfectly with a large range of foods. We’re thinking anything spicy, particularly Asian flavours. Seafood is obvious and even many kinds of salads.
