Item Description
If you've ever stepped into Sivertson Gallery in Grand Marais, the Trapper's Daughter Series has probably captured your imagination. With over a dozen prints as part of his collection, artist Rick Allen drops his audience into whimsical and iconic moments of the Northern life. From the Northern Lights with the pickerels to snowshoing with the otters, the Trapper's Daughter takes us on the backwoods adventures of our dreams.
Learn more from Rick Allen about his work as a printmaker with a one-hour visit to his studio for up to four individuals. He'll show you how the magic happens with demonstration and education about the printing process.
About Rick and the Kenspeckle Letterpress
At the western extremity of Lake Superior, the Kenspeckle Letterpress makes its home in Duluth, Minnesota (The Paris of the North). Kenspeckle is a Scottish word meaning easily recognisable or distinctive, and can be applied both to this unique corner of the globe and to the quaint conceits of modern design which Rick Allen and Marian Lansky produce in their cast iron & digital fabrefactory.
Rick works back in the 19th Century, printing his wood engravings and lino cuts in small editions using multiple blocks and hand coloring, whilst over in the 21st Century, Marian prepares limited edition giclees of Rick’s prints as well as her own.
Rick Allen has been a printmaker for so long now that there's little chance he'll be able to do anything useful for society. He worked as an illustrator for quite a while, which is probably how he started to go astray, with his work showing up in Outside Magazine and the Utne Reader, and on book covers for John LeCarre.
