Item Description
This Japantown Coffee Cake has Sold Out for Decades
Zagat | BY TAMARA PALMER | FEBRUARY 26, 2014
For 40 years, Yasukochi's Sweet Stop, a small bakery inside the Super Mira market in Japantown, has been carrying on the spirit of a beloved San Francisco treat: coffee crunch cake. Every day, Tom and Hatsy Yasukochi bake its light sponge-cake layers, frosts them with whipped cream and finishes them off with shards of a honeycomb-like candy that he makes from coffee, sugar and corn syrup. It's an homage to - if not an exact replica of - a "koffee krunch kake" that was served at Blum's, a defunct chain of Bay Area soda fountain/bakeshops that experienced its heyday in the '50s and '60s. - Read more here!
