Item Description

White-line blockprint with watercolor

14.5" x 14.5" x 1.25"

Suzanne M. Packer, founding Director, Cape Cod Museum of Art, exhibited her first work in the San Francisco Museum of Art, she was five years old. She has been honored with numerous one-person exhibitions, including Cahoon Museum of American Art, Sparrow House Museum, and "Spanning The Years: A. S. Packer & Suzanne M. Packer" at the Cape Cod Museum of Art.  Known for colorful still live oil paintings and her abstract interpretations of Cape Cod waters she now gains recognition with her white-line woodblock prints, the process she teaches at the Cape Cod Museum and Cultural Center.

White line woodblock printing is a print method which does not require a printing press or toxic inks. The prints are cut on a single woodblock. The colors, applied with a brush, are watercolors and a spoon is used to transfer the image onto the paper. This is a unique way to create original images of many colors.

The white-line woodblock print “Red Sails with Tulips” by Packer is based on her oil painting Tulips by the Bay. The first print from the block was designed, cut and printed especially for Crossing the Line: Innovators of the White-Line Print, an exhibition she curated at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, 2016-2017. This is the second print from the block, each one a unique print as the colors vary with each printing.
