Item Description

This round sturdy Pine Needle Basket is approximately 7” in diameter and created and woven by Artist / Historian Judy Schulman from Torrey Pine Needles with a woodland scene woven into the floor of the basket.  The woodland scene depicts a barn at sunset reflected in the water and four mallad ducks in the air.

The pine needles in this basket are from local Torrey Pine Trees. These trees are so special that the California State Park System has set aside Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve and Extension for their protection. In these two places the gathering of any flora, including pine needles and cones is prohibited.

Fortunately many landscapers in the surrounding Torrey Pines Reserve have chosen to plant and nurture these trees in residential and commercial areas. It is from these areas that Judy gathers her pine needles and with the permission of the homeowners.

Out of respect for the tree, Judy gathers her material from the ground. This way she takes nothing from the tree that it still may be using to grow. Nor does she remove protective ground cover from a tree by gathering all the pine needles beneath it.

This basket is one-of-a-kind created by Judy Schulman.
